Article Icon 1Lawmakers: End Time Changes

All but one member of the state's U.S. House delegation voted to pass the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent nationwide and end the twice-yearly clock changes.

The full U.S. House voted 308–117 in support of the bill, which now awaits U.S. Senate review. U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams, D-Atlanta, cast the lone dissenting vote from Georgia.

Backers say the change would deliver consistent evening daylight and eliminate the disruption of clock changes. “I consistently hear from Georgians in the 12th District who are sick and tired of resetting their clocks twice a year,” U.S. Rep. Rick Allen, R-Augusta, posted. Critics argue that permanent daylight saving time means later winter sunrises, leaving more commuters and schoolchildren traveling to their destinations before dawn.

In Georgia, the state Senate this year voted 45-5 in support of changing time zones as part of the switch, but the measure was shelved as the legislative session wound down.

Some of Georgia's school districts will head back to class starting at the end of July, kicking off a staggered 2026 return that stretches across the state through mid-August.

In North Georgia, many districts will start at the end of July or the first week of August, with several districts publishing calendars that families are now checking against summer plans.

In the Augusta area, Richmond County announced its back-to-school dates as administrators finalize bus routes and staffing.

Districts urge parents to confirm return dates locally, since school calendars vary. Some schools are also adjusting school day start times.

As the country bakes through a hot summer, the mountain town of Helen is getting national attention as one of the coolest spots to celebrate Christmas in July.

TravelPulse by Northstar's list spotlights Helen's Bavarian-style village, where alpine architecture, German bakeries, beer gardens, and horse-drawn carriages carry a year-round holiday feel.

Other cities on the list are North Pole, Alaska; Frankenmuth, Michigan; Leavenworth, Washington; and Santa Claus, Indiana.

Helen pairs its Christmas-themed shops with summer draws like tubing on the Chattahoochee River, hikes to Anna Ruby Falls, and scenic drives through the Blue Ridge Mountains.
