Election Feud Ends In Settlement

Maricopa County supervisors approved a settlement ending an 18-month legal fight with Recorder Justin Heap over who runs elections in the state's largest county.

The deal gives Heap's office control of early voting and voter registration, while the board keeps Election Day voting, emergency voting, tabulation, and canvassing. Supervisors also agreed to transfer roughly $21 million to the recorder, including $15 million to build a separate IT system and money for additional staff.

Board Chair Kate Brophy McGee framed the agreement as a reset for the county. "This agreement lets us do what I have wanted to do since I took office: make Maricopa County boring again," she said. The board's lone Democrat voted against the deal.

The settlement awaits sign-off from Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Scott Blaney, while Judge Christopher Coury, who brokered the agreement over three days of mediation last weekend, will stay on as a special master to resolve any future disputes.

Border Wall and Bond Hearings in Focus

Arizona's top Republican lawmakers filed a brief backing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in its dispute with the Tohono O'odham Nation over plans to build 62 miles of border wall through the reservation.

Separately, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a ruling requiring bond hearings for immigrants held under the Trump administration’s mandatory detention policy. The U.S. Supreme Court plans to take up a related case in its next session.

In the border wall dispute, the tribe contends that a 1927 law bars changing reservation boundaries without the approval of Congress. The Pima County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 in support of a resolution opposing that construction.

Arizona House Speaker Steve Montenegro and Senate President Warren Petersen argued that illegal border crossings affect Arizona and the rest of the country, and that national security outweighs the tribe's objections.

Heat Drives Down Golf Prices

As temperatures soar, the state's celebrated golf courses are slashing summer green fees to lure players onto little-used fairways.

They're also trying to take a little sizzle out of the heat worries. “Guaranteed it’s cooler on any part of our course than in the desert or any part of the city,” said Joe Shershenovich, general manager of the Grayhawk Golf Club in north Scottsdale.

Statewide, dozens of top public courses offer deep discounts, with early-morning tee times helping golfers beat the worst of the desert heat. Even top courses now cost a fraction of peak prices, with some weekday afternoon rates set at $40 to $60.

Resorts are also bundling perks: Litchfield Park's Wigwam Golf Club rolled out a summer six-pass offering six rounds, unlimited range access, and dining deals.
