Betty Yee Exits Governor Race

Former state Controller Betty Yee suspended her campaign for California governor Monday morning, narrowing the crowded Democratic field.

Yee said she couldn't see "a path to be successful" as donors held back amid her near-bottom polling. She received around 1-2% support in recent surveys, even as the race shifted following Eric Swalwell's exit amid sexual misconduct allegations.

An early entry, Yee built her campaign around fiscal expertise from two terms as state controller and recently styled herself as "Boring Betty," promising drama-free government. She raised just $344,000 in the second half of last year, well behind top contenders.

Her name will still appear on the June 2 primary ballot due to a March filing deadline. Six leading Democrats remain, along with two leading Republicans.

USS Spruance Seizes Iranian Cargo Ship

The San Diego-based destroyer USS Spruance attacked and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship Sunday in the Gulf of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz, the first interception since the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports began last week.

President Trump said in a Truth Social post that the guided-missile destroyer warned the Touska to stop and then "stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engine room." U.S. Marines have custody of the vessel.

Iran's joint military command called the boarding an act of piracy and a ceasefire violation, vowing to respond. The fragile U.S.-Iran ceasefire is set to expire Wednesday.

USS Spruance is part of the USS Abraham Lincoln Strike Group, which is homeported at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, and has been deployed to the Arabian Sea for months. U.S. Central Command said the destroyer issued repeated warnings over a six-hour period before firing.

LACMA Opens $742M David Geffen Galleries

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) opened the doors to its new David Geffen Galleries on Sunday, completing a roughly 20-year, $742 million transformation of one of California's major cultural institutions.

Designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, the sweeping glass-and-concrete structure replaced multiple older buildings with a unified open-plan space for LACMA's permanent collection. Members entered during a private preview Sunday before the public opening May 4.

The project drew criticism over its cost and years-long delays, but the result is a building with about 110,000 square feet of gallery space. Zumthor's design has earned praise from architecture critics for its elegant, light-filled galleries.

LACMA is the largest art museum in the western United States.

➤ Roseville: About 10–12 Union Pacific rail cars derailed Sunday evening near Foothills Boulevard—two caught fire, but there were no injuries and no major hazardous materials threat. Division Chief Jaime Pepin said it’s the largest derailment he’s seen in 20 years. (See Details)

➤ Santa Barbara: A Superior Court judge last week refused to lift an order blocking Sable Offshore Corp.'s Gaviota Coast pipeline, rejecting the company’s claim that a Trump administration directive overrides California law. Colleges Cut Dozens of Degree Programs

Public universities in Ohio have eliminated nearly 90 degree programs to comply with Senate Bill 1, a higher education reform law signed last year.

SB1 requires colleges to cut undergraduate programs that produce fewer than five degrees per year. The law also bans diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at public universities and prohibits faculty strikes.

Kent State University, Ohio University, and Wright State University each plan to cut more than a dozen degree programs. Cuts are also planned at The Ohio State University, the University of Toledo, the University of Cincinnati, and other schools.

Some schools have not eliminated any programs, while others have not yet announced which programs they will cut.

Survey Finds Unease Over Data Centers

A survey of more than 2,000 residents across 15 central Ohio counties found that most want to slow data center development in the region.

Residents cited concerns about data centers’ effects on power and water supplies, air quality, land use, and infrastructure.

The findings come as supporters of a constitutional amendment restricting data centers begin working to place the issue on the statewide ballot, while Gov. Mike DeWine has said state lawmakers are in the best position to regulate data centers.

Some communities have enacted local restrictions on data center development, including a moratorium through 2027 that the Sunbury City Council passed last week.

Ohio No. 15 in Economic Outlook Report

Ohio placed No. 15 in a group's ranking of the states with the brightest economic outlooks, despite losing ground in economic performance in recent years.

The American Legislative Exchange Council said Ohio's decreasing tax burdens offset its low ranking for overall economic performance. You can view the complete report here.

Ohio ranked ahead of its neighboring states except No. 7 Indiana.
