Knoxville Woman Detained in Libya
A Knoxville woman is among 10 civilians held in eastern Libya after being detained while participating in a global humanitarian convoy bound for Gaza. Jenelle Jones, a U.S. citizen, was stopped near the Sirte "5+5" crossing by the Libyan Arab Armed Forces and eastern Libyan authorities. She was traveling with the Global Sumud Land Convoy, an international humanitarian effort to reach Gaza by land with aid supplies. Friends and family back in Knoxville are pressing for answers, calling on U.S. officials to intervene and secure her release. Those close to Jones say they've had little information about her condition or whereabouts since she was taken a week ago. No timeline for release has been given. |
Floods Continue across Tennessee
Heavy rain overnight and into Saturday morning caused flooding across parts of East Tennessee, prompting a flood watch through early afternoon and multiple road closures. While isolated storms remain possible today and tomorrow, the broader flooding threat is expected to decrease as high pressure brings several days of quieter weather. The ongoing downpours come on the heels of deadly floods in some areas of the state, including Cocke County, where survivors described floodwaters that arrived with terrifying speed, and some said the damage was worse than Hurricane Helene. Three to five inches of rain overwhelmed small creeks, turning them into fast-moving torrents that trapped residents in their homes. |
UT Launches East TN Quantum Hub
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has launched the Knoxville Quantum Accelerator, branded K-Quantum, to position East Tennessee as a national leader in quantum computing and technology. K-Quantum brings UT together with regional powerhouses, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, TVA, CGI, and IonQ. ORNL already runs some of the nation's most advanced quantum research programs. The hub supports Gov. Bill Lee's Tennessee Quantum Initiative, a $43 million state strategy to recruit quantum companies and create high-wage jobs. Knoxville joins Chattanooga and Oak Ridge in a statewide quantum corridor advancing manufacturing, life sciences, and logistics. |
