Vice President JD Vance and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin called for an independent investigation by the EPA inspector general into the Biden administration's response to the 2023 East Palestine train derailment, pointing to newly surfaced documents and lingering questions about chemical exposure.

In a social media post, Vance said residents deserve transparency and accountability and called for investigators to determine what information key players had about potential health risks.

Federal models cited in recent reporting show nearly 18,000 people may have faced phosgene exposure at levels capable of causing severe injury. Researchers also found that the plume from the controlled burn reached 16 states.

Vance and Zeldin said any shortcomings found could prompt changes to emergency response, environmental monitoring, or coordination among federal agencies.

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is scheduled to launch this morning at 7:26 a.m. from Kennedy Space Center in Florida after more than a decade of work that involved Ohio State researchers.

Astronomy professor David Weinberg said 20 to 30 people from the university contributed, including about 10 undergraduates, five faculty members, and graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Weinberg said the university has a larger footprint in the mission than any other university, with Ohio State researchers having been involved from Roman's early planning stages.

The $4.3 billion observatory will launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy toward the L2 point, roughly 1 million miles from Earth.

Its 300-megapixel infrared camera will survey billions of galaxies, search for more than 100,000 planets around other stars, and help scientists study dark energy and the structure of the universe.
