Article Icon 1Supreme Court Weighs Boulder Energy Case

The U.S. Supreme Court opens its new term today by hearing a Colorado case on whether Boulder can sue Exxon Mobil and Suncor Energy in state court over alleged climate change costs.

Boulder first sued in 2018, alleging the companies deceived the public about fossil fuels. The Colorado Supreme Court ruled the suit could proceed, and the companies appealed.

Justice Samuel Alito recused himself from the case, raising the chance of a 4-4 tie that would leave the Colorado ruling in place. A decision is expected by summer 2027.

The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) says October through December is peak season for wildlife crashes, as animals move to lower elevations during their mating season.

Wildlife crashes have risen every year since 2021, climbing from 2,296 that year to 3,904 in 2025, according to CSP data.

Troopers have recorded nearly 3,300 crashes so far this year. White-tailed deer and elk are the most frequently struck animals.

High-risk stretches include I-70 at Floyd Hill and I-25 from Castle Rock to Larkspur. If a crash can't be avoided, CSP advises drivers to brake straight and stay in their lane.

Pueblo police are searching for a metal bison sculpture made by children and stolen overnight along with its trailer from a hotel parking lot.

Denver students spent nine months building the sculpture to teach people about the bison's comeback from fewer than 1,000 animals to about 500,000 today.

Police say surveillance video shows a white pickup leaving the lot with the black trailer after 3:30 a.m. Saturday. The trailer carries Colorado plate EUX-T06.

The group's adult leader Scott Gilmore said the students would still present at the El Pueblo History Museum. Tips go to Pueblo police at 719-553-2502.
