Article Icon 1Paxton Sues Gerber Over Metals

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced a lawsuit Wednesday against Gerber and its parent company, Nestlรฉ USA, accusing them of selling baby food as safe and rigorously tested, even though Gerber's own tests showed dangerous levels of arsenic, lead, and cadmium.

Paxton said 67 batches of Gerber rice flour from 2017 to 2019 contained more than nine times the arsenic level allowed in bottled water. Gerber says its products meet FDA limits and that heavy metals absorbed by crops can't be fully removed.

In 2021, an Alaska state lab found two samples of Gerber rice cereal over the federal arsenic limit, the suit says. Competitor Beech-Nut recalled its cereal despite lower average readings, while Gerber issued no recall or disclosure.

Paxton, the Republican U.S. Senate nominee, is suing under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act. The suit says Gerber now posts test results via QR codes on its labels, but its front-of-package safety claims haven't changed.

The Midland City Council voted 7-0 Tuesday to cancel its Flock Safety contract and have the company haul away the city's 73 license plate reader cameras, just eight months into a two-year deal.

In February, Police Chief Greg Snow credited the cameras with recovering 49 stolen vehicles and nearly $4 million in stolen property. The council unanimously approved the $451,000 deal. By July, residents' privacy concerns had prompted some city leaders to rethink it.

Ending the deal now saves the city the $225,500 second-year payment. Midland joins Wylie and Pflugerville in dropping Flock. Dallas pulled some cameras after Gov. Greg Abbott paused state funding for them in September.

Article Icon 1First Fall Weather Front Sweeps In

The season's first major cold front will sweep across Texas Thursday and Friday, dropping temperatures more than 20 degrees and possibly bringing the first freeze to parts of the Panhandle by Saturday morning.

"Expect wind gusts to around 40 mph on Friday, so make sure to secure any outdoor decorations!" the National Weather Service in Fort Worth posted Tuesday. The cooler air lingers through the weekend, with the 80s returning early next week.

Ahead of the front, storms could soak West Texas. A flood watch for 18 west-central counties, from San Angelo to Abilene, runs through Friday morning, with 1 to 3 inches of rain expected and up to 5 inches in spots.

Texas activated state emergency resources Tuesday, including swiftwater rescue boat squads, game wardens, and helicopters capable of hoisting people out of high water. Officials are also monitoring power outages and tracking natural gas supply.
