Moreno Questions Fatal Crash

U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, is demanding answers from Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont after 29-year-old Austin J. Karr Grimes was killed in an Aug. 29 Fulton County crash involving a driver who held a Connecticut drive-only license.

Washington G. Naula Ochoa, 34, was charged with vehicular homicide after authorities said he failed to yield at a stop sign and struck Grimes' SUV. He has pleaded not guilty.

Lamont defended Connecticut's program, saying illegal immigrants “need to drive for work, school and daily life,” and that it’s “safer for everyone when that driving happens within a regulated system.”

In his letter, Moreno expressed “outrage over this preventable loss of innocent life.”

NCAA Clears UC in Sorsby Probe

The NCAA has cleared the University of Cincinnati of wrongdoing in its investigation of prohibited sports betting by former Bearcats quarterback Brendan Sorsby.

Sorsby, who transferred to Texas Tech after two seasons at Cincinnati, was permanently ruled ineligible in April after the NCAA said he wagered at least $90,000 during his college career.

The NCAA had opened a formal inquiry after Sorsby's case became public. Sorsby later said he accepted full responsibility for his gambling problem and plans to enter the 2027 NFL Draft.

Ohio Prepares for Holiday Traffic

The Ohio Turnpike and Ohio State Highway Patrol are urging drivers to use caution as the state prepares for heavy Labor Day weekend traffic.

Turnpike officials plan to limit construction from noon today through sunrise Tuesday to keep two lanes open in both directions. Last year's Labor Day weekend brought more than 681,000 Turnpike transactions and nearly 39 million vehicle miles traveled.

A statewide safety campaign will offer up to $15 in rideshare credits during overnight hours in seven counties. Officials said, “Historically, no other holiday period in Ohio has more fatal and serious-injury crashes than Labor Day weekend.”

ODOT has also published the best and worst times for travel across the state using last year's traffic patterns, giving motorists a city-by-city guide to avoiding the heaviest congestion.
