Speeding Enforcement Operation to Begin July 13

Law enforcement agencies across Georgia will participate in Operation Southern Slow Down July 13-19, an annual campaign targeting speeding, aggressive driving, and other traffic violations on interstates and major highways to prevent crashes and traffic deaths.

During last year’s campaign, Georgia law enforcement reported over 13,290 speeding contacts, 501 DUI arrests, and thousands of warnings and citations for violations of the state’s Hands-Free and seat belt laws.

Data shows that speeding contributed to one out of five fatal crashes in Georgia between 2020 and 2024.

"The goal for ‘Operation Southern Slow Down’ is not to write tickets but to get more drivers to see that traveling at slower and safer speeds prevents families and friends from losing loved ones in crashes that are preventable," said Allen Poole, director of the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

DUI Cases Dismissed Amid State Trooper Scandal

Twenty-seven DUI cases were dropped after four former Georgia State Patrol troopers involved in a “PIT for Pay” insurance scandal failed to appear for court proceedings.

The troopers were terminated earlier this year after an investigation found they violated department policy and ethical standards by receiving funds from personal injury claims tied to crashes caused by PIT maneuvers used during police pursuits.

Three of the troopers received nearly $100,000 combined from the claims. Their supervisor was fired for failing to report the practice and attempting to file his own personal injury claim.

Additional cases are expected to be dismissed in the weeks ahead.

New Civil War Exhibit Opens at Atlanta Museum

A new Civil War-era exhibit called “More Perfect Union: The American Civil War Era,” opened yesterday at the Atlanta History Center as part of its 100th anniversary celebration.

The exhibit uses artifacts, photographs, immersive films, interactive digital maps, and more to educate visitors on the Civil War era.

A second phase of the exhibit titled “Hard Hand of War: Soldiers, Weapons and Mass Production,” opens in October.

The Atlanta History Center is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets for the museum can be purchased here.
