One of five surviving copies of an early printing of the Declaration of Independence is on public display at the Cincinnati Museum Center this summer as America celebrates its 250th birthday.

The Holt Broadside was printed in New York City in July 1776, making it older than the signed parchment displayed at the National Archives in Washington. The same version was read aloud to George Washington’s troops as British forces gathered near the city.

An early settler carried the document over the mountains into Ohio in the early 1800s, and it remained in his family before eventually reaching a local historical society. The museum is displaying the copy for only the second time, with the exhibit open through Aug. 23.

A Toledo native returned to Lake Erie after spending 295 days alone on the water to complete the Great Loop, a nearly 5,000-mile route around the eastern United States.

Jake Harrigan set sail last September in a 30-foot boat he rebuilt by hand, stripping it to the hull and replacing its diesel engine with an electric motor powered by solar panels and lithium batteries. His route took him from northwest Ohio through the Great Lakes, down the Mississippi River, around Florida, and up the East Coast before heading home.

The trip followed a testicular cancer diagnosis at age 24 in 2020, which Harrigan said changed his outlook. After making a full recovery, he decided not to wait to pursue the voyage. You can see clips from his trip here.

His advice to anyone delaying a dream: “Retirement is not guaranteed. Do it now while you still can.”
