Long before Michael Phelps became an Olympic swimming legend, Mark Spitz captured America’s attention with seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympics. He made a fortune off of his name in the years that followed, but today he leads a low-profile life in California, as we learn in today's Whatever Happened To… section.

US Strikes Iran after Intercepting Drones

U.S. forces struck Iranian coastal radar sites on Saturday after shooting down drones launched by Iran toward regional traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. Central Command said the U.S. struck Iran’s surveillance sites in Goruk and Qeshm Island, which are both on the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran also fired seven ballistic missiles at Kuwait and Bahrain. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps said it targeted U.S. bases there in retaliation for U.S. strikes and fired on four tankers attempting to cross the strait without its permission.

Centcom said: “Initial assessments indicate six of the missiles launched by Iran were intercepted and a seventh did not reach its intended target. There are currently no reports of harm to U.S. personnel, and Iranian claims of damaging U.S. 5th fleet headquarters in Bahrain are false.”

Trump Urges Firings of Intelligence Officials

President Trump said he wants incoming acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte to "start the process" of firing intelligence community officials.

The President does not plan to nominate him for a position that would require Senate confirmation. Pulte, who currently serves as the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, would be limited to serving 210 days in an acting capacity.

Trump said: "I’d like to see it smaller. I think there are a lot of people in there that shouldn’t be there."

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence oversees 18 U.S. intelligence agencies, but it’s unclear what power Pulte would have to carry out firings at other agencies, such as the CIA.

LIST: Top Cities for New Residents in US

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Wilmington, North Carolina, have attracted the most new residents in the United States for the fourth year in a row.

The rankings, compiled from consumer data, draw on moves by baby boomers, Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z. The top five also includes Ocala, Florida; Dallas-Fort Worth; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Close to 58% of respondents cited affordability as the deciding factor for relocation, while 41% moved for better community and connection.

Whatever happened to Mark Spitz?

Mark Spitz is one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century, a swimmer who peaked so spectacularly that his story has two distinct halves: his improbable triumph in the 1972 Munich Olympics, and then the long, sometimes awkward process of being a living legend.

He was in the water before he could really walk, and by age 10 he held 17 national age-group records. The destination always seemed obvious. But getting there wasn't.

Spitz arrived at the 1968 Mexico City Games loudly predicting six gold medals and left with two relay golds and a bruised ego. The humiliation turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to him. Four years later in Munich, he entered seven events over eight days and won every single one, setting a world record each time. You can see highlights here.

Afterwards, the photograph of him in his swimsuit, seven medals draped around his neck, became the best-selling sports poster of the decade. America couldn't get enough of swimmer Mark Spitz.

Then came the awkward part. He was 22, absurdly famous, and everyone wanted a piece of him: razor commercials, milk campaigns, TV variety shows, a Hollywood career that critics politely destroyed. He made $7 million in two years and later admitted he hadn't been remotely prepared for any of it.

He retreated into real estate in Beverly Hills, did some Olympic commentary for ABC, and tried one last comeback at 41, falling two seconds short of qualifying for Barcelona in 1992. It was an easy effort to mock, but in fact, Spitz had cracked the world top 30 in his sport at middle age.

Today, at 76, Spitz lives quietly in Los Angeles with his wife, Suzy; his two sons live nearby. He gives motivational speeches, stays connected to the swimming world, and holds a place in history that even Olympic legend Michael Phelps could only partially dislodge.
