The USDA confirmed a second screwworm case in Zavala County on Friday, a one-month-old calf about 5 miles from the first detection, as Canada announced a temporary ban on Texas livestock imports.

Gov. Greg Abbott expanded a disaster declaration, authorizing all state resources to fight the outbreak. Texas leads the nation in cattle, with $17 billion in livestock at stake.

West Texas feedlots are already hurting. Lubbock Feeders, a 70-year-old operation, sits mostly empty after border closures choked its Mexican cattle supply. The new cases mark the first Texas screwworm infestation in 60 years.

Torrential overnight downpours dumped up to 8 inches of rain on Williamson County, pushing the South Fork of the San Gabriel River past moderate flood stage and closing at least 35 low-water crossings across Central Texas.

Texas game wardens rescued or evacuated nine people yesterday morning across multiple counties. In Falls County, four people were trapped in a vehicle near Marlin, which later declared a disaster and asked for state help.

A flood watch remains in effect for North Texas through this afternoon. The storms will give way to summer heat next week, with highs climbing into the upper 90s.

Texas is officially in World Cup mode, with Czechia and Sweden setting up base camps in North Texas ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off on June 11.

Czechia will train in Mansfield, Sweden in Frisco, and Saudi Arabia has made Austin its hub. Nine matches, including a semifinal, are set for AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Texas got an early taste of drama this weekend when Saudi Arabia’s warm-up against Puerto Rico was halted nearly two hours by lightning, previewing the storm protocols that could shape summer matches.
