The Committee to Abolish Ohio Property Taxes announced Friday it fell short of its internal goal of roughly 620,000 signatures to place a constitutional amendment eliminating property taxes on the November 2026 ballot.

The group, known as Ax Ohio Tax, ran its signature campaign for nearly a year and attracted national attention. It is now targeting the November 2027 ballot instead.

Ohio property taxes fund roughly $21 billion in public services statewide, including schools, townships, and libraries. The proposed amendment would have fully eliminated the tax at the constitutional level.

Ax Ohio Tax would need to collect the required signatures again for the 2027 ballot effort, with a new petition deadline ahead.
