Good Morning! On this day in 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt warned union leaders in a telegram that a strike involving nearly 50,000 Akron rubber workers was “a blow against the effective prosecution of the war.” Strikers returned to work the next day. This is an abbreviated edition of The Ohio Flyover, so that our staff could spend Memorial Day with family and friends. We’ll return tomorrow with our full lineup. After President Trump warned the Iranian World Cup team to steer clear of American soil "for their own life and safety," Iran has now found a new country willing to host them instead. On The Flyover Podcast, Ayla Brown shares the surprise nation stepping in to take the team, plus what Iran has to say about the world's sporting event being held in America. Tune in here!

WWII Soldier Brought Home
More than 80 years after U.S. Army Pfc. John A. Walko was killed on a German battlefield, his remains were finally brought home and laid to rest in Commodore, Pennsylvania, in a ceremony attended by his 96-year-old sister, Sally Gaydosh, a resident of Twinsburg, Ohio. Walko was killed by mortar fire during the Battle of Aachen on Oct. 20, 1944. His body was interred as an unknown soldier at the U.S. Military Cemetery Henri-Chapelle alongside a crucifix, rosary, and Miraculous Medal. “It’s kind of sweet,” Gaydosh said. “They thought it was him because of his religious beliefs.” The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced the identification on May 1, citing DNA testing and forensic analysis conducted after Walko’s remains were exhumed in 2023. |
