Dallas Explosion Kills 3, Search Ends
Dallas Fire-Rescue ended its search Friday at a leveled Oak Cliff apartment complex, confirming all residents were accounted for after a deadly gas explosion. Thursday's blast at the Clyde building on East Ninth Street killed three people—two women and a child—and hospitalized five others. The five-alarm explosion leveled the two-story complex and drew 120 firefighters. Neighbors said the blast shook nearby homes and flung debris; the community held a vigil Friday. Attorneys for victim Sylvia Collins' family vowed to seek answers. Atmos Energy says a construction crew damaged a gas line, and the NTSB is investigating. |
Texas Border Arrest Law Cleared
A federal appeals court on Friday cleared Texas Senate Bill 4 to take effect, reversing an injunction blocking the state's sweeping border law. The Fifth Circuit ruled challengers lacked standing, freeing a law that lets state and local police arrest suspected illegal crossers and lets Texas judges order deportations—powers normally reserved for federal officials. Civil rights groups condemned the ruling and vowed to keep fighting, warning it could subject Hispanic Texans to stops based on race, not legal status. Texas passed SB 4 in 2023 amid record-high crossings; it takes effect with encounters at record lows. |
Spurs Stun Thunder, Reach Finals
The San Antonio Spurs bucked heavy odds to beat the defending-champion Oklahoma City Thunder 111-103 on the road in Game 7 Saturday night, reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014. Victor Wembanyama led with 22 points and 7 rebounds, while Julian Champagnie added 18 of his 20 points on 3s. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 35 for the Thunder but couldn't save the champs. A late transition block by reserve Luke Kornet swung the game with Wembanyama benched in foul trouble. San Antonio hosts the New York Knicks in Game 1 Wednesday, a rematch of the 1999 Finals. |
