Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday declined to endorse a successor in the June 2 primary, saying his focus is preventing two Republicans from advancing to November.

Speaking at a San Francisco press conference, Newsom said he wants to avoid a "lockout" of Democrats under the top-two primary system, where the two highest finishers advance regardless of party.

Recent polling has shown Republicans Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco competitive in a crowded field of Democratic candidates.

Termed out at year's end, Newsom said he understood the situation: Jerry Brown stayed neutral when Newsom ran in 2018. "Drove me crazy," he said, adding that he may owe Brown an apology.

At last Tuesday's debate, Hilton and Bianco tied California's high cost of living to Democrats' long control of state government, with Bianco arguing the state's problems trace to decisions made in Sacramento.

Secretary of State Shirley Weber said Friday her office had no legal authority to remove antisemitic conspiracy theories from the 2026 voter guide before it was mailed to registered voters statewide.

The statement was written by independent candidate Don Grundmann, who claims Israeli "art students" carried out 9/11 and that an Israeli bomb killed activist Charlie Kirk. It links to extremist sites.

The Jewish Federation Los Angeles called publishing the entry "indefensible and reprehensible," arguing the First Amendment does not require the government to distribute hate speech.

Weber, in a statement Friday, said her staff had reviewed Grundmann's submission but "found no legal basis to reject the statement or remove it from the Voter Information Guide, even taking into account its inflammatory, controversial, or offensive content."

California's 20-day public display period passed without challenge. Weber said printing was already finished and mailings were 80% complete by the time complaints arrived, and her office is now working with the legislature on tighter rules.

Article Icon 1Pentagon UFO Files Include Merced Sighting

The Pentagon on Friday published declassified UFO records that include a 1949 eyewitness account of a "flying disk" over Merced, written by an Air Force Reserve major.

The major's letter describes a clicking sound "like beaters of a home mixer" coming from above his Merced home on April 4, 1949. He stepped outside and watched a dull metallic object about 4 or 5 feet in diameter blank out stars overhead.

The Merced report is one of more than 160 records the Department of War posted to a new government website as part of a Trump administration transparency effort the agency calls PURSUE.

The Pentagon said many of the materials have not yet been analyzed to resolve any anomalies. More files will be added on a rolling basis.
