State Demands Muslim School Cease Operations

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) has ordered the recently established Texas American Muslim University at Dallas to cease operations, stating the nonprofit organization has not been authorized by the agency to grant degrees.

The Richardson school, which started classes last October and calls itself TexAM University, claims it's the first university in the nation to offer STEM degrees and require courses in Islamic studies. On Thursday, Gov. Greg Abbott warned that "legal action will follow" if the school doesn't comply with THECB's order.

In a statement, TexAM founder Shahid Bajwa said the organization is "actively engaging with THECB to clarify any misunderstandings and to ensure full compliance with State regulations."

The Texas A&M University System has also accused TexAM of trademark infringement. The university demands the destruction of all TexAM marketing materials and the transfer of the texam.education domain name within 10 days.

Camps Can Open without Fiber Internet

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has reached an agreement with summer camps that allows them to obtain a license to operate without fiber-optic internet service, provided they "maintain a redundant, broadband internet service" and meet all other safety requirements.

The development follows a statement from Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows expressing support for an exemption to the new requirement for fiber-optic internet service, established in the wake of last summer's deadly flash floods. Nineteen camps also sued to block the requirement.

"This agreement will ensure that youth camps in Texas operate with the safety provisions envisioned by the Legislature while allowing camps and families to move forward with their summer plans," said DSHS Commissioner Jennifer Shuford.

As an alternative to fiber-optic internet service, camps must have two forms of Internet service, including high-speed cable, a cellular, microwave, or satellite connection. Lawmakers have pledged to address the issue during the next legislative session.

Texas UFO Sightings

Numerous documented UFO sightings originating from Texas were included in the Pentagon's Friday release of 161 files related to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, or UAP.

On April 14, 1949, 1st Lt. Robert A. Francis reported seeing an object "round and in the shape of a ball, very silver in color" traveling "over 1000 miles per hour" at Carswell Air Force Base. "It did not appear to burn out, but suddenly disappeared," according to his report.

In November 1957, Hockley County Sheriff Weir Clem responded to reports of an "egg-shaped object" that looked like a "blinding-red sunset" near Levelland. Three drivers claimed the object disabled their engines. When one of them got out of his car to look at it, the object rose "200 feet straight up in the air" and disappeared.

In 1948, witnesses in Memphis reported seeing cigar-shaped objects falling from the sky, and one man claimed he recovered a four-foot piece of metallic wreckage from one of them. In 1950, a man photographed two groups of "flying saucers" near Fort Worth, though he clarified they looked "more like flying bananas than flying saucers."

In 1965, NASA mission control in Houston received a report of a "bogey at ten o'clock high" from the crew of Gemini 7. One of the astronauts later described the sighting as "a brilliant body in the sun against a black background with trillions of particles on it."

➤ Big Bend: U.S. Customs and Border Protection will not construct a physical border wall through Big Bend National Park, according to Commissioner Rodney Scott. Instead, roads along the border will be paved, and surveillance equipment will be used to deter border crossings. (More)
