Metro Nashville has filed a public nuisance lawsuit against Publix, accusing the grocery chain's pharmacies of fueling the city's opioid crisis by failing to monitor suspicious orders of prescription painkillers.

The complaint alleges Publix failed to give pharmacists the tools to conduct due diligence before dispensing oxycodone and other opioids, and accuses Publix of deceiving public officials while the crisis deepened.

Tennessee ranks third in the nation for opioid prescription rates, and overdose deaths in the city have increased even as overall prescription volume has slightly declined.

The city is seeking financial recovery for taxpayer dollars spent on first responders, hospitals, law enforcement, and mental health services, and demanding Publix address the harm it allegedly caused. The chain settled a similar federal lawsuit in 2025.

More than 600 worn American flags were retired in a dignified ceremony in Newport ahead of Memorial Day, as nonprofit AMVETS Post 75 brought together veterans, scouts, and families to honor Old Glory.

The ceremony, hosted by Newport Rescue Squad at its burn pits, featured an honorary standard recovered from flood debris after Hurricane Helene almost two years ago.

For veterans like Rob Watkins of AMVETS Post 75, the event was a lesson for young people in what the stars and stripes represent, and an opportunity to honor the fallen for Memorial Day.

“Once you go into the military and you hit a combat zone, you realize you’re putting your life up for the people back home, and you don’t want to see the flag dishonored," said Pud Valentine, captain of Newport Rescue Squad.
