Senate GOP Refuses to Vote on Trump's Bill
Senate Republicans on Thursday delayed voting on a $72 billion immigration enforcement bill, leaving for the Memorial Day recess and missing President Trump's June 1 deadline. The bill stalled over the Trump administration's $1.8 billion fund for allies who say they were politically persecuted, with Republicans worried about how the money would be allocated. The money was part of Trump's settlement with the IRS. Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., who lost his primary after Trump endorsed his opponent, criticized the fund, saying voters care more about groceries and gas prices. GOP lawmakers are also divided over whether to include a $1 billion request for the Secret Service over the prospect that the money could be used to construct Trump's new 90,000-square-foot White House ballroom. |
Georgia Power to Seize Homes for AI
Georgia Power is using eminent domain to seize hundreds of properties for a 35-mile transmission line feeding AI data centers, with up to 30 homes facing demolition. Coweta County homeowner Angela Hall, who escaped public housing to buy the property in 2003, has until Aug. 1 to leave the home she'd hoped to pass to her granddaughter. Daughter Ansley Brown's TikTok went viral, pushing Georgia Power to raise its initial lowball offer to 125% of fair market value. The family is fighting the offer. The corridor is part of a $16 billion grid expansion adding 10 gigawatts of capacity, with 80% going to data centers. |
NASCAR Star Kyle Busch Dies at 41
NASCAR superstar Kyle Busch died Thursday at age 41, hours after his family announced he was hospitalized with a severe illness. The cause has not been disclosed. Busch was in his 22nd full-time Cup Series season, having won championships in 2015 and 2019. His 63 Cup wins rank ninth all-time. Across NASCAR's three national divisions, his 234 combined wins are the most in the sport's history. He drove the No. 8 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing. Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte will go on as planned, with Austin Hill stepping in for Busch in the No. 8. NASCAR called him a future Hall of Famer.
