The Texas Board of Nursing has suspended the nursing license of Mary Liz Eastland, co-director and chief health officer of Camp Mystic, citing "child abandonment" during last July's catastrophic flood.

Eastland allegedly evacuated herself and her own children from the Kerr County camp in the early morning hours of July 4, 2025—as floodwaters began rising around 2 a.m.—without calling emergency services or alerting other staff to the danger.

Twenty-seven campers and staff members died in the flood. Regulators also cited Eastland's failure to develop an emergency plan for the facility prior to the disaster.

The license suspension is a formal accountability action against a Camp Mystic official in the wake of the July 2025 flood. Families of the victims have been pressing state regulators for consequences.

Article Icon 1Flood Watch Through Memorial Day Weekend

A Flood Watch is in effect for multiple Southeast Texas counties through Memorial Day Monday as a slow-moving Gulf storm system continues pushing repeated rounds of heavy rain into the region.

Coastal areas, including Matagorda and Brazoria counties, absorbed 4 to 6 inches of rain between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. A fresh wave of showers and storms arrived Thursday morning, with the heaviest activity expected south of I-10, where already-saturated ground is turning even moderate downpours into rapid street flooding.

Forecasters warn that cumulative totals of 4 to 8 inches are possible through the holiday weekend, potentially ranking Houston among the wettest spots in the country, with Gulf moisture keeping the pattern active into early June.

Officials are urging all residents in the watch area—spanning Galveston, Fort Bend, Wharton, and surrounding counties—to stay off flooded roads and heed "Turn Around, Don't Drown" guidance through the holiday weekend.

Article Icon 1Texas Democrat Under Fire

A Texas congressional candidate is facing condemnation from her own party after an Instagram post vowing to convert the Karnes County ICE facility into "a prison for American Zionists."

Maureen Galindo, a sex therapist who led the March Democratic primary for Texas' 35th Congressional District, also wrote that many Zionists are "pedophiles." On a radio appearance this month, she said, "Anybody who is supported by Israel should be tried for treason."

House Democratic leaders quickly condemned the post and statement as antisemitic. Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair Suzan DelBene issued a joint statement disavowing Galindo’s language, and House Democrats have threatened to expel Galindo from the caucus if she wins the runoff.

Galindo faces fellow Democrat Johnny Garcia in the May 26 runoff, while some Texas Democrats have alleged that Republican-linked groups are boosting her candidacy.
