More than 53,000 Texas students have been selected for participation in the state's new education savings account program during the second round of award distributions, the Texas Comptroller's office announced Monday.

Last month, over 42,600 students with disabilities and their siblings received priority award notices from the $1 billion school choice program. More than 72,000 students qualified for participation under Tier 2, which is designated for households with an income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. A lottery was used to select the award recipients.

More than 274,000 families applied for a Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) during the first year of the program—far more than its funding can accommodate. "Texas families have waited a long time for school choice, and the response to TEFA shows just how much this opportunity means to parents across our state," acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock said.

TEFA provides participants with $10,474 a year to attend private school and $2,000 for homeschooling, while students with disabilities can get up to $30,000. Students who weren't selected for participation will be placed on a waitlist. Families have until July 15 to accept their awards.

Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a third lawsuit targeting the proposed Muslim-centric community formerly known as EPIC City, alleging a municipal utility district (MUD) violated the Texas Open Meetings Act (TOMA) when its entire board was replaced, and the 402-acre development was annexed last September.

The lawsuit accuses the Double R Municipal Utility District No. 2A of Hunt and Collin Counties of failing to provide adequate notice of its meeting or the agenda items to be considered. The meeting was the district's first in more than four years. It was held in a field identified by GPS coordinates.

"EPIC City developers have tried to evade the law in any way possible, but I will fight to uncover and stop any illegal scheme that seeks to advance their project," said Paxton. He is asking a Collin County court to invalidate the annexation and bar the MUD's board directors from meeting again.

A court halted work on EPIC City—renamed The Meadow—in March after Paxton sued the MUD over its board appointments and their action to expand its boundaries. A December lawsuit alleging violations of Texas securities law by the project's developer is pending.

Last week, a new ad from U.S. Sen. John Cornyn accused Paxton, his GOP Senate primary opponent, of failing to shut down EPIC City.

GameStop, a Grapevine-based retailer of new and used video games and trading cards, has proposed to acquire online auctioneer eBay for $125 per share, valuing the company at nearly $56 billion.

Prior to trading yesterday, GameStop's market capitalization was about $11.9 billion, while eBay's was roughly $46 billion. GameStop shares plummeted more than 10% yesterday, closing at $23.84, while eBay stock rose 5%, closing at $109.33.

GameStop has accumulated a 5% stake in eBay and would leverage its position, along with more than $9 billion in cash and a $20 billion loan, to finance the deal. CEO Ryan Cohen said he would target $2 billion in cost reductions within a year and suggested that GameStop's 1,600 stores could boost sales on the platform.

"This is a business that is under-earning and can make a lot more money," Cohen said of eBay, suggesting it could become a "legit competitor" to e-commerce giant Amazon. eBay said its board would review the unsolicited proposal.
