Weiser Wins Top Ballot Spot

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, a Democrat, will appear first on the party's gubernatorial primary ballot after winning 90% of the delegate vote during a state assembly Saturday.

Weiser will run against U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet in the race to replace term-limited Gov. Jared Polis. Bennet successfully petitioned onto the ballot, opting not to participate in the assembly in Pueblo.

State Sen. Julie Gonzales, who is challenging incumbent U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper, secured the top primary spot in the U.S. Senate race with 74% of the vote. See more results here.

Colorado's 2026 primary election will be held June 30. Democrats who win the primaries are favored to win the November election. Republicans last won a statewide race in 2016.

Costilla County Sheriff Indicted, Resigns

A grand jury on Thursday indicted five people tied to the Costilla County Sheriff’s Office, including the sheriff, undersheriff, and sheriff’s son, on multiple charges stemming from two separate incidents.

The indictment includes allegations that Sheriff Danny Sanchez and former Deputy Keith Schultz mishandled human remains found on the Wild Horse Mesa in 2024, in part by failing to properly report the discovery and storing a skull in a paper grocery bag.

Undersheriff Cruz Soto, Deputy Roland Riley, and Sgt. Caleb Sanchez were indicted over a February incident allegedly involving excessive use of force on a man suffering a mental health crisis.

Sheriff Sanchez resigned Saturday. The district attorney’s probe into the office is ongoing, meaning more findings or potential charges could emerge from the case.

Summit FC Shatters Attendance Record

Denver Summit FC, the city's first professional women's soccer team, played its inaugural home game at Empower Field on Saturday.

Summit's match against the Washington Spirit drew 63,004 fans, shattering the National Women's Soccer League's previous single-game attendance record—set in San Francisco in 2025—of 40,091 attendees.

A fierce defensive battle left both teams scoreless, ending the match in a 0-0 tie, but the crowd's energy remained electric throughout the day. See photos here.

Summit faces the Seattle Reign on April 4 ahead of their next home game on April 25. The club hopes to open its permanent stadium in Denver in 2028.
