Food Stamp Sign-Ups Plunge

Food stamp enrollment in Arizona fell 31% from October to January under new federal rules, with about 533,000 getting SNAP benefits as of January.

State officials attribute the decline largely to tightened eligibility standards and expanded work requirements included in the federal One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed in July.

The law requires more able-bodied adults without dependents to work at least 80 hours a month, eliminates several exemptions, and mandates stricter state eligibility reviews.

Supporters say the law promotes accountability and workforce participation, while opponents warn that the expanded work rules could disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.

Golf Balls Fund Toy Donations

A 73-year-old Anthem man is turning stray golf balls into toys for hospitalized children across the Phoenix Valley.

Through his nonprofit, Smiles 4 Sick Children, Brian Billideau has delivered more than 42,000 toys by selling 355,000 donated golf balls. The proceeds fund new toys for children in five Valley hospitals.

Billideau, who lives with rheumatoid arthritis, said his mission began more than 30 years ago after a young girl ran in front of his car and was killed.

"I've been trying to give back to kids ever since," he said.
