State school superintendent Tom Horne urged lawmakers to continue efforts to fund school resource officers, eliminate DEI requirements, and raise teacher pay in his annual State of Education address on Tuesday.

Horne also touted school choice via Empowerment Scholarship Accounts. Watch his full speech.

The president of the Arizona Education Association was among those who criticized Horne's remarks, saying his 15-minute speech lacked detail and failed to address issues such as school closures or broader teacher support beyond pay.

Elsewhere, Horne noted the launch of a partnership with employers to offer free tutoring and career-readiness training aimed at helping students build job skills.

Article Icon 1Lawmakers Renew Flood Aid Request

A group of lawmakers called on the Federal Emergency Management Agency to reconsider federal disaster funding for fall flooding in Gila County, citing updated damage reports.

Republican U.S. Reps. Eli Crane, Andy Biggs, Juan Ciscomani, and David Schweikert sent a letter urging FEMA officials to visit affected areas, stating that a more accurate assessment put the damage above $100 million—triple the initial estimate.

"When viewed in the aggregate, these impacts demonstrate a level of strain that exceeds the reasonable capacity of affected communities to manage without federal support," the letter states.

FEMA notified Arizona officials in late December that the initial $33 million in estimated losses were "not of such severity and magnitude" to exceed state and local capabilities.

This Painful Thing Still Happens 10M Times a Year?
