Trump Ends Biden Student Loan Plan

The Trump administration reached a settlement with Missouri on Tuesday, ending former President Biden's Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) repayment plan, forcing 7 million borrowers to choose new repayment options.

The Education Department agreed not to enroll new borrowers in SAVE, deny pending applications, and move current participants into other legal plans.

SAVE offered lower monthly payments—often $0—and faster debt forgiveness timelines than other income-driven plans, with the Congressional Budget Office estimating it would cost $230 billion over a decade.

Australia Cuts Teens Off from Social Media

Australia's first-in-the-world social media ban for users under 16 is taking effect today, requiring platforms to deactivate more than 1 million accounts.

Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and other platforms must take "reasonable steps" to prevent underage users from creating or maintaining accounts, facing fines of up to $33 million for violations. See which platforms are banned.

The law, which Australian officials say will be "the world's first domino," aims to protect children from addictive algorithms, cyberbullying, and online predators, with 77% of Australians supporting the measure. See the Australian teens' perspective here.

While the U.S. has no federal ban, at least eight states have passed laws restricting children's access to social media, although many face court challenges on First Amendment grounds.

Prison Foils Crab Boil Scheme

Guards at South Carolina's Lee Correctional Institution intercepted a drone delivery Sunday containing steak, crab legs, Old Bay seasoning, marijuana, and cigarettes.

The Department of Corrections posted about the bust on social media, using the hashtag #ContrabandChristmas, and stated, "Folks were planning an early holiday Old Bay crab boil and steak dinner."

The prison spokeswoman quipped that inmates expecting the package are probably "crabby." See the photo of the contents here.

Flying a drone near a South Carolina prison is a misdemeanor carrying 30 days in jail, while dropping contraband is a felony with up to 10 years behind bars. No arrests have been made yet.
