Article Icon 1Muslim Groups Declared Terrorist Organizations

Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order on Monday designating the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as foreign terrorist organizations.

Under the order, state agencies are directed to "undertake all lawful measures to prevent unlawful activities by these organizations, including denying privileges or resources to anyone providing material support."

DeSantis said both of these groups promote violence. The Trump administration has also initiated a formal process to designate certain chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations.

In an emailed statement, CAIR and its Florida chapter said the organization plans to sue DeSantis in response to what it called an "unconstitutional" and "defamatory" proclamation. Founded in 1994, CAIR has 25 chapters nationwide.

Article Icon 1Trump and DeSantis Clash on AI

A conflict between President Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis over who should regulate artificial intelligence (AI) threatens to derail a planned "AI Week" in the Florida Legislature.

Trump announced on Monday that he will establish a single federal standard governing AI, stating that he will sign an executive order aimed at curbing separate state AI regulations. Trump said AI companies shouldn't have to navigate a costly and confusing patchwork of state laws.

Florida, Texas, and Colorado, acting in the absence of congressional action, have adopted their own rules to address AI-related risks, from consumer protections to data use. DeSantis objects to federal preemption of state laws. He introduced Florida's AI Bill of Rights last week.

A draft of Trump's executive order would allow the Department of Justice to sue states over AI regulations deemed unconstitutional and threaten federal funding cuts for laws considered overly restrictive.

Article Icon 1Higgins Wins Miami's Mayoral Election

On Tuesday, Democrat Eileen Higgins flipped the Miami mayor's office in a special election, defeating Republican Emilio Gonzalez with 59% of the votes with 99% of precincts reporting.

Higgins is the first Democrat to become mayor of Miami since 1997. She beat Gonzalez, a former Miami city manager who served on President Trump's Homeland Security Department transition team, to succeed incumbent Mayor Francis Suarez.

This marks a major win for Democrats, who have defeated GOP rivals in several 2025 off-year elections. Although technically a non-partisan election, Gonzalez was endorsed by the Republicans, including President Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Higgins, 61, who has become known as "La Gringa," is the first woman ever elected mayor in Miami.
