Good Morning! On this day in 1901, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt spoke at the Minnesota State Fair, where he quoted an old proverb he lived by: "Speak softly and carry a big stick." Historians have never found a citation for the line before Roosevelt uttered it, and they believe he actually coined it himself earlier in his career.

Massive Quake Kills Over 800 in Afghanistan

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late Sunday, killing more than 800 people and injuring nearly 3,000.

Entire villages were flattened in the remote, mountainous region, where clay-built homes crumbled and blocked roads hampered rescue efforts.

The quake’s shallow depth—just 5 miles—amplified the devastation, leaving survivors trapped and hospitals overwhelmed. See photos here.

Taliban officials and aid agencies have launched airlifts and appealed for international assistance as the country reels from ongoing crises, including drought, hunger, and aid shortages.

Boy Rescued from Hersheypark Monorail

A young boy was safely rescued Saturday evening after he was spotted walking alone atop a closed monorail track at Hersheypark in Pennsylvania. Watch a video here.

The child, reported missing around 5 p.m., had wandered into a secured area and climbed onto an elevated Capital BlueCross Monorail, which was not operating at the time.

John Sampson, a father from Bucks County who was visiting the park, said his “dad instincts kicked in” when he saw the child teetering on the edge. He climbed onto a snack stand roof, jumped onto the track, and carried the boy to safety.

The child, who had been missing for about 20 minutes, was unharmed and quickly reunited with his family.

Biologists Use Classic Rock to Deter Wolves

U.S. Department of Agriculture biologists are using drones and classic rock to prevent gray wolves from attacking livestock near the California-Oregon border.

The drones blast loud, unfamiliar sounds, like AC/DC’s Thunderstruck and argument clips from the movie Marriage Story, which startle the wolves and drive them away from the cattle herds. Watch a video here.

The approach plays on wolves’ aversion to novel stimuli and has proven more effective than electric fences or guard dogs. Gray wolves, once nearly wiped out, have rebounded across the Rockies and Northwest, putting ranchers on edge.

While the $20,000 drones offer short-term relief, experts and ranchers alike caution that the wolves may eventually catch on.
