Nicolas Cage will return to a major studio movie for the first time in a decade as he will portray Dracula in the upcoming movie "Renfield"…

Oscar winner Nicolas Cage will leave his passion for independent movies behind him for at least one film after signing on to star as Dracula in the upcoming movie about his infamous henchman called "Renfield."

Cage — who has fallen in love with indie filmmaking in recent years with acclaimed performances in films such as "Mandy" and the recent movie "Pig" — hasn't been part of a major studio production since starring in "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" back in 2011.

Now he'll return for the Universal monster movie that's focused on Dracula's sidekick Renfield, who will be played by "X-Men" star Nicholas Hoult.

In the original "Dracula" novel by Bram Stoker first released in 1897, Renfield is a patient at an insane asylum who is convinced that he can prolong his own life by consuming the blood of other creatures in a sort of madman's version of vampirism. He's later coerced by Dracula to serve his needs as the vampire tortures him almost like a play thing while feeding him insects and rats to feed his insatiable need for more blood while promising to eventually offer him the gift of everlasting life.

Not much is known about the plans for a film version with "Renfield," although the original outline for the story came from "Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman with Chris McKay — best known for his recent work on "The Tomorrow War" — serving as director.

The new movie is described as a modern day adventure with comedic tones but there are no plot details that have been made public just yet.

With Cage in place to play Dracula and Hoult as Renfield, the rest of the cast will begin filling out with production to begin on "Renfield" in early 2022.
