The Phoenix Mercury came into tonight's game trying to extend their winning streak to seven consecutive wins. The Mercury have not lost a game since July 11 to the Seattle Storm. They are looking to continue their success against Chicago at home. In addition to that, they clinched the playoffs for the ninth year in a row.
As for the Chicago Sky, they are coming off a dominating 107-75 win over the Storm on Sunday, looking to continue their late success and extend their three-game winning streak. With the playoffs approaching quickly, the Sky need every win they can to clinch a playoff berth. They are currently sitting right behind the Mercury in 6th place with a 14-13 record.
Sky's Struggles
The Sky had a bit of an off game tonight. The Sky on Sunday had six players score double-digit points. On top of that, they scored a total of 15 three-pointers.
Tonight, they had four people score double digits and made six threes. Sure, teams will not have that kind of success game in and game out, but going 6/20 from behind the arc is not acceptable for a team that averages close to 40% from the three.
On top of that, the Sky cannot have Candace Parker play 24 minutes and only have 2 points the entire game. She needs to get the ball and get her shots up. Her two points came from free throws. Tonight she went 0/2 from the field and then 0/1 from behind the arc.
She did contribute defensively, getting rebounds and getting her teammates the ball, but a star player like Parker needs to have the ball.
The Sky need to do a better job defensively; they allowed too many easy shots. The Mercury made 14 threes tonight. They also shot 52% from the field and outrebounded the Sky.
The Sky's top performer comes as no surprise to any person who is a fan of the Sky, Kahleah Copper.
Copper finished tonight with 18 points and 5 rebounds.
Skylar Diggins-Smith
The reigning Western Conference Player of the Week has been on an absolute tear these past few games. Coming into tonight, she has been averaging 27 PPG, 6 APG, and 2.4 SPG while shooting 53.1% from the field in her last two games.
Tonight she did everything but disappoint.
The 5-time all-star did everything tonight. She was attacking the glass, getting the ball to her open teammates, and getting rebounds.
Diggins-Smith finished with 20 points, 10 assists, and 9 boards, one rebound shy of a triple-double.
Diggins-Smith was taken out late in the fourth while her team was up by 19 points with 2:14 left to play.
Head coach Sandy Brondello did not want to risk leaving Diggins-Smith in to get that one last rebound. Especially after Britteny Griner's ankle injury in the final few minutes of last week's game against the Liberty.
She was a walking highlight all night long. She would lead the Mercury to a 103-83 blowout win over the Sky.
What's Coming Up
The Mercury are headed to Indiana to face off against the Fever on Saturday, September 4.
While the Sky are headed to Vegas to take on the Aces this Thursday, September 2.
