Article Icon 1Chemical Leak Forces Toledo Evacuations

A ruptured chemical tank in north Toledo vented a white plume for hours Wednesday, prompting officials to order hundreds of residents to evacuate and advise more than 50,000 others to stay indoors.

City leaders chose to let the tank vent rather than send crews near other stored tanks, estimating Wednesday afternoon that the release could last another 6 to 16 hours.

“There’s no question the situation is improving,” Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said, citing drones that showed the tank cooling and the plume shrinking.

The 5,500-gallon tank at MC Tank Transport held glycidyl methacrylate, an industrial chemical used in plastics and paints that can irritate the lungs, skin, and eyes.

This story continued to develop into Wednesday evening.

Article Icon 1Ramaswamy Doubles Down on Acton Ad

Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is putting $4 million behind a controversial ad in which Democrat Dr. Amy Acton’s estranged mother accuses her of lying about her childhood, less than two weeks before Election Day.

Acton’s campaign answered with an ad featuring her brother, who accused Ramaswamy of trying to turn the sexual abuse Acton says she suffered from her stepfather into a “political talking point.”

Secretary of State Frank LaRose said his office is reviewing complaints about the ad but declined to discuss specifics, adding that he probably wouldn’t run such an ad himself.

Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, said he “would not have run that ad,” but Vice President JD Vance told fellow Republicans to “stop whining” and “go win the race.”

A 2,455-pound pumpkin broke the show’s giant pumpkin record Wednesday as the 119th Circleville Pumpkin Show got underway.

Pumpkin growing runs in Troy VanArsdalen’s family, as his 10-year-old grandson placed fourth with a 1,553-pound pumpkin in just his second season.

The free festival runs through Saturday with daily parades, carnival rides, and roughly 23,000 pumpkin pies.
