Hurricane Isaias Arrives
Hurricane Isaias came ashore near Destin, Florida, on Friday night as a Category 2 storm with 105 mph winds, weakening to a Category 1 as it moved inland and bringing the threat of heavy rain, damaging winds, and possible tornadoes to Georgia. Isaias, the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, strengthened into a hurricane on Oct. 7, marking the Atlantic season’s latest first hurricane in 121 years. North and central Georgia could see widespread rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, with higher totals in some spots, according to the National Weather Service. Wind gusts could reach 40 to 60 mph in parts of north Georgia. Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency for all 159 counties before the storm arrived, and thousands in south Georgia have lost power. Conditions should improve significantly overnight Saturday into Sunday morning, according to the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency. |
Federal Loan Funds Columbus Plant UpgradesPlant Oliver in Columbus will get about $25 million for upgrades at the facility. The funds for the modernization are part of a $26.5 billion federal loan package for Georgia and Alabama announced by the U.S. Department of Energy in February. Officials say the work should keep the facility generating another 40 years and estimate the full package will reduce customers' costs by more than $7 billion over the next three decades. Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson said energy costs weigh on companies deciding whether to move to the city. |
Atlanta Dream Advance to WNBA Finals
The Atlanta Dream punched their ticket to the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2013 after defeating the New York Liberty 85-83 in Game 3 of the semifinals Friday. Angel Reese led Atlanta with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Rhyne Howard added 21 points. DeWanna Bonner’s two free throws with 6.2 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter sealed the victory after the Liberty missed a game-tying layup with nine seconds left. Atlanta secured the series sweep with three consecutive wins over New York, including a 92-82 victory in Game 1 and a 101-98 overtime win in Game 2. The Dream entered the playoffs as the No. 4 seed after finishing the regular season with a 30-14 record. The Dream, who remain undefeated in the postseason, will face the Golden State Valkyries in the best-of-seven WNBA Finals beginning Oct. 17 as they pursue the first championship in franchise history. |
