Board Bars Illegal Immigrants from Universities

The Florida Board of Governors voted Thursday to bar students in the country illegally from enrolling at the state's public universities.

The new regulation blocks anyone "present in the United States unlawfully" from initial enrollment at any state university that doesn't admit all academically qualified applicants. It takes effect with the 2027-28 academic year.

Gov. Ron DeSantis backed the vote on X, saying he was glad the board moved to "ratify the prohibition on illegal alien students" and to put Floridians first.

Robert Cassanello, president of the United Faculty of Florida, said the board "has lost sight of its responsibility to safeguard higher education" and that the rule closes doors as the state faces shortages in healthcare, education, and skilled trades.

Florida joins Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina in restricting enrollment. The state Board of Education passed similar bans for state colleges and adult education programs earlier this year.

Grand Jury Faults Child Welfare Agency

A grand jury has found the Florida Department of Children and Families is "an agency in crisis" across the five-county circuit around Ocala, failing to protect children and vulnerable adults.

The Fifth Judicial Circuit covers Marion, Citrus, Lake, Sumter, and Hernando counties. Jurors detailed six cases in which the agency's inaction led to severe trauma and preventable deaths.

The report found adult investigators didn't answer calls after 5 p.m. or on weekends, skipped mental capacity evaluations, and showed up to court unprepared. Law enforcement accused DCF workers of falsifying records in 12 cases, eight of which brought charges.

Six DCF employees were invited to address the grand jury. All declined or didn't respond, and the department hadn't commented as of Friday evening.

Ocala Police Chief Mike Balken said failures like these carry "real and tragic consequences," and credited the dedicated DCF professionals who do good work across the community.

Soccer Stadium Planned near Melbourne Airport

A developer has bought 53 acres from Melbourne Orlando International Airport to build an 8,000-seat soccer stadium on the Space Coast.

The stadium would sit along NASA Boulevard and anchor a mixed-use complex with roughly 55,000 square feet of shops, bars, and restaurants, plus space for youth sports and community events.

It would be home to the Space Coast Soccer Club, which is targeting the United Soccer League's 2028 season. Permits are filed with the city, which is still working through design and approval.

Mayor Paul Alfrey wants it used for more than soccer, calling it "really an event stadium" he's wanted for years and pointing to concerts.

Construction hasn't started, and the project still needs investment and infrastructure. An airport spokesperson said the development could pull visitors from outside the region and lift passenger traffic.

➤ Key West: Monroe County detectives identified David Allen Snyder, a former Key West resident, as the killer of sisters Maggie and Mary Jenkins, 18 and 16, who vanished while hitchhiking on Stock Island in 1973. Genetic genealogy cracked it; Snyder died in 2008. (Read Story)

➤ Alachua County: School zone speed cameras issued 424 citations over the first three weeks of classes: 77, then 177, then 170. The cameras sit near Chiles Elementary and the Wiles Elementary–Kanapaha Middle zone, and each ticket carries a $100 fine. (More)
