Vols Fall Short Against No. 1 Texas

No. 14 Tennessee mounted a late comeback bid against No. 1 Texas but fell 20-17 at Neyland Stadium, with President Trump in attendance.

Trump arrived in style, with Air Force One flying over the stadium before kickoff. Vols legend Peyton Manning was also in the stands to watch his nephew, Texas quarterback Arch Manning, in the programs' first meeting since the 1969 Cotton Bowl.

Texas’ defense collected 10 sacks, including five by Colin Simmons, who tied a Longhorns single-game record. Freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon still pulled the Vols within three on a late touchdown pass, and Tennessee recovered the onside kick but couldn't capitalize.

Saturday’s checkered crowd marked the program's 30th consecutive sellout.

Trooper Collides with Wrong-Way Driver

Dash camera video released by the Tennessee Highway Patrol shows a wrong-way driver barreling into a state trooper's cruiser on I-40 in Dickson County on Thursday.

Sgt. Goddard, assigned to THP’s Memphis District, was heading home from a training session in Nashville when an elderly man was driving toward him in the wrong direction near mile marker 176, close to the Interstate 840 interchange. The video shows the car cresting a hill in the far-left lane, and Goddard swerved left so the two vehicles clipped each other instead of meeting head-on.

“A direct head-on impact would have been deadly, or they would have sustained very serious injuries,” THP Sgt. Andrew Perez said. Troopers train for emergency driving, but Perez said Goddard had only seconds to react.

Both men were hurt in the crash. THP says both are expected to make a full recovery.

State Parks Map Out Fall Getaways

Tennessee State Parks released a list of 10 recommended fall destinations alongside a guide to where and when to see peak foliage. Together they give travelers a plan for autumn trips across the state.

For mountain scenery, Cumberland Mountain State Park is set on the rugged Cumberland Plateau, near the 110-foot Ozone Falls. Norris Dam, about 30 minutes north of Knoxville, has trails with views of the mountains and the lake. Warriors’ Path in Upper East Tennessee offers boating, fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. Other top recommendations include Standing Stone, Chickasaw, Pickwick Landing, Paris Landing, Tims Ford, Edgar Evins, and Reelfoot Lake state parks.

Timing is key. In East Tennessee, leaves start changing in early October and peak around the third week of the month. In Middle and West Tennessee, the change starts in mid-October and peaks by Halloween. Weather and moisture levels affect both when colors peak and how bright they are.

Travelers should book early. Overnight stays at popular parks such as Fall Creek Falls should be reserved at least a month ahead. All state park campsites allow pets, and every park with cabins has some pet-friendly options.
