Ohio Power Line Plan Goes Public

Grid Growth Ventures opens the first of 13 open houses Sept. 21, asking Ohioans to help route roughly 220 miles of new high-voltage transmission line.

The plan calls for four 765-kilovolt lines and one 345-kilovolt line from Darke County at the Indiana border east to Guernsey County. Grid operator PJM Interconnection selected the project in February and forecasts nearly 4,800 megawatts of new regional demand by 2032, much of it from data centers.

Not every county wants it. Miami County commissioners came out against any route through their county in an Aug. 20 statement, citing farmland, property owners, and future development, and said they're working with state Reps. Johnathan Newman and Phil Plummer to fight it.

No route is final. A second round of open houses is set for early 2027, and Grid Growth needs Ohio Power Siting Board approval before construction, which could begin in 2028.

Emeritus Ohio State Professor Among Missing

Hanumantha Rao Unnava, an Ohio State marketing professor emeritus, and his wife, Vasundhara, are among roughly 80 Americans unaccounted for after flash floods tore through the Nepal-China border region.

Both taught at Ohio State's Fisher College of Business before moving to the University of California, Davis, where Rao Unnava retired in June as dean of the graduate management school. Their daughter, Vaasavi, said her parents planned to cross into Tibet the day the floods hit.

A glacial collapse high in the Himalayas triggered the Aug. 26 flooding, and the combined death toll in Nepal and Tibet reached 950 on Monday. Nepal's disaster agency counted 3,925 people still missing, including 592 foreigners.

The State Department says 13 Americans have reached safety and has reported no confirmed American deaths. Rescuers are also digging toward roughly 500 hydropower workers believed trapped in flooded tunnels.

JobsOhio Offers $10,000 per Trained Technician

JobsOhio will pay employers up to $10,000 for every worker who finishes an approved technician training program, an incentive that opened for applications Monday.

The JobsOhio Technician Path covers associate degrees, technical certificates, and registered apprenticeships, with payments tied to three milestones. Employers must be based in Ohio, work in a targeted industry, and pay participants at least $20 an hour.

Ohio has about five open technician jobs for every qualified candidate, and officials expect the state to need more than 230,000 technically skilled workers over the next decade. Workers keep drawing a paycheck while they train.

The launch ran through seven events Monday, from Eastland Career Center in Groveport, where One Columbus co-hosted, to Youngstown State's Excellence Training Center. The incentive is the first phase of a $300 million, 10-year JobsOhio commitment to the technician pipeline.
