Ohio's Gas Tax Could Pause Soon

Ohio lawmakers plan to interrupt their election-season recess and return to Columbus to vote on suspending the state's 38.5-cent gas tax for 90 days.

Democrat Amy Acton called Monday for an emergency gas tax holiday. Hours later, Republican Vivek Ramaswamy unveiled a Gas Tax Relief Plan alongside House Speaker Matt Huffman and Senate President Rob McColley, who is his running mate.

Regular gas averaged $4.52 a gallon in Ohio on Monday and diesel $6.77, according to AAA. A year ago, regular was $3.04.

"Ohioans are hurting," Acton said, saying the state can offer relief "without compromising on investing in our infrastructure." Ramaswamy said Ohioans need "a real leader who takes action," not "just empty statements."

Ramaswamy would backfill the lost revenue with transportation funds, general revenue, or the rainy day fund. Gov. Mike DeWine, who pushed the tax up in 2019, hasn't said whether he'd sign it.

ICE Detentions of Haitians Double

Nearly 75 Haitians have been detained at four Ohio jails that contract with ICE since their temporary protected status ended July 27, a 142% increase.

The tally comes from a report by the Ohio Immigrant Alliance, an advocacy group that reviewed jail rosters in Hamilton, Youngstown, Tiffin, and Stryker. The Supreme Court cleared the way in June for President Trump to end the status for 330,000 Haitians.

Enforcement has centered on Springfield, home to about 15,000 Haitians. Springfield ICE Watch counted 74 arrests from Aug. 7 to Sept. 17, many at traffic stops or in apartment and grocery store parking lots.

Erik Crew, an attorney with the Haitian Bridge Alliance, interviewed 15 detainees at the Butler County Jail. "None had criminal records."

The Department of Homeland Security said monitoring decisions are made case by case by career officers and that the technology "is not assigned based on nationality."

Discarded Evidence Turns Up by River

A box of evidence envelopes from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office turned up on the ground near the Great Miami River in downtown Dayton.

The sheriff's office learned about it from a video circulating on social media. Deputies from the Forensic Services Unit collected the envelopes.

The office said the property inside was no longer needed because the criminal cases tied to it had closed, and the envelopes had been thrown into a dumpster at sheriff's headquarters.

That dumpster is normally locked until the waste carrier empties it. Investigators believe someone got into it and pulled the envelopes out.

Taking discarded material out of a dumpster isn't itself illegal, the sheriff's office said, but deputies want to know who left the envelopes by the river.
