DeWine Warns Against Gas Tax Holiday

Gov. Mike DeWine is pushing back on a plan to suspend Ohio’s gas tax for 90 days, warning that pulling roughly $750 million from road funds to cover it would be “devastating.”

Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy unveiled the proposal with Statehouse leaders as diesel prices hit record highs.

The proposal would waive the state’s 38.5-cent tax on gasoline and 47-cent tax on diesel through the December holidays. Lawmakers return Sept. 30 to vote.

Democrat rival Amy Acton also backs a tax holiday.

Euclid Beach Arch Shines Again

Cleveland’s century-old Euclid Beach Park Arch lit up Friday night as the centerpiece of the city’s newest park, the 1.55-acre Euclid Beach Arch Park on Lakeshore Boulevard.

The Humphrey family, which owned the lakefront amusement park, built the arch in 1921 in the shape of an “H” to honor the family’s name. The arch stood long after the park closed in 1969.

Crews moved the arch about 150 feet by crane last year, off a stretch of East 159th Street where vehicles had struck it for decades.

McDonald’s donated the land on the condition that it always remain open space.

St. Xavier Upsets Elder

St. Xavier edged rival Elder 31-29 Friday night at The Pit on Owen Davidson’s 25-yard field goal as time expired, giving coach Steve Specht his 200th win at the school.

The walk-off kick handed the previously unbeaten Panthers their first loss. Elder had rallied from a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit to lead 29-28 with 5:10 left, but its two-point try failed.

Thomas George threw for 192 yards and three touchdowns for the Bombers. Elder’s Andrew Lyman caught a touchdown pass while playing under a temporary restraining order he received Friday, a day after being ruled ineligible under OHSAA transfer rules.
