Canada's Tariffs on US Goods Kick In

Canada's retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion in U.S. goods took effect just after midnight Tuesday morning, hitting American milk, cheese, steel, golf clubs, appliances, and clothing with duties of 15% to 50%.

Ottawa vowed to match Washington's 50% duties "dollar for dollar" after trade talks collapsed last month. Economists say Midwest manufacturers and dairy producers in Wisconsin and Vermont could take the biggest hit.

Hours before they kicked in, President Trump threatened to ban sales of Canadian plane maker Bombardier's jets in the U.S., writing, "If they want our Market, they must build here."

The tit-for-tat covers about 6% of American exports to Canada, with 50% U.S. tariffs on Canadian cars and steel still set for January. See the full list of tariffed products here.

Mamdani Faces Push to Skip 9/11 Event

A petition from 9/11 victims' relatives urging New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's exclusion from Friday's 25th anniversary ceremony at ground zero topped 100,000 signatures Tuesday.

Mamdani says he will attend, and has at least eight commemorations planned this week, including a speech at the NYPD's official ceremony.

The petition lists eight grievances, including his pick of a chief counsel who represented a man charged in a 2002 tanker bombing plot, and his ties to a Brooklyn imam who hosted the 1993 World Trade Center bombing mastermind.

Former New York Gov. George Pataki, a Republican, says Mamdani should skip the event unless he distances himself from streamer Hasan Piker, who said America deserved 9/11, remarks Mamdani has called "objectionable and reprehensible."

NFL Launches Global 2026 Season

The NFL's 107th season kicks off today with a Super Bowl LX rematch, as the defending champion Seattle Seahawks host the New England Patriots. Tomorrow, the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams meet in Melbourne for the league's first regular-season game ever played in Australia.

The schedule is the league's most global ever: a record nine international games across seven countries and four continents, including first-time visits to Rio de Janeiro and Paris. The season wraps up on Valentine's Day 2027 with Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The Rams open as Super Bowl favorites after acquiring Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett, with the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, Seahawks, and Kansas City Chiefs close behind in the betting odds.

Fans will also notice several rule changes. Teams can now declare an onside kick at any point in a game, kickoff alignment rules have been revised, and certain on-field penalties will now draw suspensions.
