Weiser Sues to Halt ICE Center

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday to stop a planned immigration detention center at the former Hudson Correctional Facility.

The suit says DHS and ICE skipped a required environmental review before contracting with GEO Group to run the site, known as Big Horn.

Weiser says the facility would nearly double Hudson's population and could strain local water systems, roads, and nearby wildlife habitat.

He wants a judge to cancel the contract and halt work until the government completes the required analysis. The state's case is the second to challenge the facility on environmental grounds.

State Awards Healthcare, Bear Grants

Gov. Jared Polis announced nearly $170 million in federal rural health grants Monday for 91 applicants and about 250 projects across rural Colorado.

The money will help rural communities train and retain workers, expand mobile clinics, and modernize electronic health records.

Separately, Colorado Parks and Wildlife awarded $1 million in bear conflict grants to 17 projects, including $100,000 for bear-resistant bins in Manitou Springs.

Colorado Creative Industries also named 187 Colorado Creates recipients in 33 counties, with one-year grants of $6,000 to $14,000 for arts groups.

K-9 Finds Missing Children

A Chaffee County sheriff's K-9 named Arch helped find three missing children Saturday after they wandered from a family campsite east of Buena Vista.

The children, a 9-year-old and two 6-year-olds, were part of a large Denver-area family camping near the Midland Bike Trail.

Relatives searched for two hours before calling deputies, who brought in drones, a helicopter, and search and rescue teams.

Arch picked up a scent at camp and led searchers toward the kids, who were found uninjured about 1.5 miles away around 2 p.m.
