Good Morning! On this day in 1813, "Uncle Sam" first appeared in print as a nickname for the United States. A Troy, New York, newspaper picked up a soldiers' joke that the "U.S." on their Army beef barrels stood for "Uncle Sam" Wilson, the local meatpacker who supplied them.

Amazon Cargo Jet Crash Kills 5 in Miami

An Amazon cargo jet overran the runway at Miami International Airport just before 2 p.m. Sunday, plowing through vehicles on a nearby road and bursting into flames. At least five people were killed, and five were injured, three of them critically.

The 32-year-old Boeing 767, operated by 21 Air, was landing from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Rescuers worked to free the two pilots trapped in the cockpit and a person pinned under a vehicle.

More than 60 fire units battled the flames and an active fuel leak for hours. Watch the video here.

About 250 flights were delayed Sunday, and disruptions are expected into this morning. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. It remains unclear whether the dead were on the plane or in the vehicles it hit.

Mail Voting Rules Head to Supreme Court

The Trump administration filed an emergency appeal with the Supreme Court on Sunday, asking the justices to let new Postal Service mail ballot rules take effect for November's midterms.

The filing came two days after a federal judge extended her block on the rules, finding them likely unconstitutional and warning they nearly guarantee "significant disenfranchisement" of mail voters.

The rules stem from President Trump's executive order on mail voting. States would give the Postal Service voter names and addresses tied to a barcode on each ballot, and carriers would deliver only to voters on the list.

With ballots already going out in some states, the justices are expected to move quickly. The challengers have until Tuesday morning to respond.

UN Retires Map That Shrinks Africa

The United Nations General Assembly voted to adopt a new world map, retiring the 457-year-old Mercator projection that shows Africa about the same size as Greenland. Africa is actually about 14 times larger.

The "Correct the Map" resolution passed 164-1 with six abstentions. It urges governments, schools, and tech companies to switch to the Equal Earth projection, a 2018 design that shows landmasses at their true relative sizes. See the new map here.

Togo led the push on behalf of African nations. "A fair map does not change the geography of the world, it changes how we see the world," the country's foreign minister said.

The United States cast the lone vote against, calling the effort part of a "radical ideological project." The resolution is nonbinding, and no country is required to change its maps.
