Wildfire Smoke Hospitalizes 14 Soldiers

Fourteen Ohio National Guard soldiers were sent to hospitals last month during a training exercise after wildfire smoke pushed Michigan’s air quality to dangerous levels, according to an Ohio National Guard spokesperson.

Michigan issued a statewide air quality alert July 15 because of elevated fine-particle pollution. Commanders removed pregnant soldiers and troops with respiratory conditions from field training, delivered 20,000 KN95 masks, and obtained oxygen tanks locally.

About 3,000 soldiers were participating at Camp Grayling. Officials halted all field exercises July 17 after the air quality index exceeded 500, then resumed training once conditions improved. All 14 hospitalized soldiers have since been discharged.

Ohio Cyclospora Cases Top 4,000

Ohio’s cyclosporiasis outbreak reached 4,087 cases Friday, up from 2,650 a week earlier. The state ranks second only to Michigan as investigators worked to identify additional sources.

Cyclospora can cause prolonged watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and dehydration. Symptoms may take up to two weeks to appear, making exposure difficult to trace, and a stool Polymerase Chain Reaction test can help confirm the infection.

Taco Bell removed Taylor Farms shredded iceberg lettuce after federal officials linked it to illnesses in several states. Researchers said the restaurant chain wasn’t the sole source, leaving the broader investigation unresolved.

Wilkin Case Has Person of Interest

Puerto Rico police have identified a person of interest in the killing of Tyler Wilkin, a 35-year-old Wilmington man found shot near his campsite in Luquillo on July 10.

Wilkin was discovered with a single gunshot wound to the head in mangroves near Playa La Selva. Before his death, he messaged friends about someone howling and setting off fireworks near his tent, then sent a final message about two hours later.

A private investigator said the noises may have been used to lure Wilkin from his campsite, though the theory remains unconfirmed. His family and friends are seeking $30,000 to hire an investigator, while the FBI provides assistance to police in Puerto Rico.
