Storms Knock Out Power in Memphis

Storms tore through Shelby County on Saturday afternoon and cut power to more than 100,000 Memphis Light, Gas and Water customers.

At the peak, about 130,000 homes and businesses had no power, but most customers are expected to be back on by Thursday evening.

The damage came from a bow echo, a curved line of thunderstorms that can drive straight-line winds of 80 to 100 mph. Forecasters confirmed those winds hit the area, though no tornado has been confirmed.

"Our immediate priorities are restoring power to hospitals, water treatment, and sewer facilities," MLGW said. Utility crews and tree trimmers were out Saturday night, sizing up the damage.

Manager Who Built Alabama, Chesney Dies

Dale Morris, the Nashville manager who built Alabama and Kenny Chesney into two of country music's biggest touring acts, died Friday at 89.

Morris took on Alabama in 1979, and the band ran up 33 No. 1 hits and three CMA Entertainer of the Year awards. When arenas wouldn't pay country acts what rock bands got, he moved the group to open fields and tripled its money.

He did it again with Chesney, who went from country also-ran to stadium headliner with 33 No. 1 hits and four CMA Entertainer of the Year trophies. Old Dominion, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Ricky Van Shelton were also clients.

He never used contracts with Alabama or Chesney, who wrote in his 2025 book Heart Life Music that Morris just said, "Let's do it."

Bear Crashes Gatlinburg Tea Shop

A young bear strolled into a Gatlinburg tea shop Friday, tore into a sweet-tea blend, and jumped up on the counter.

Victoria Puyol and Joshua Card were marking their seventh anniversary when Card spotted the animal in the doorway of The Spice & Tea Exchange. The clerk moved them behind the register, near an emergency exit.

The bear nosed through tea diffusers while a crowd gathered outside, and an air horn from a neighboring store barely fazed it.

"Hey, what you doing there, buddy?" Card says on the video, right before the bear hops onto the counter. "He's talking to this thing like it's a puppy. It's a bear," Puyol said.

The bear bolted out on its own after 10 to 15 minutes. Employees told the couple it had raided the shop earlier in the week for sugar.
