Pathways to Coverage Program Could End

Gov. Brian Kemp's administration signaled that it could end Georgia Pathways to Coverage, the state’s partial Medicaid expansion that covers roughly 18,500 low-income Georgians who are ineligible for traditional Medicaid.

Officials say that the program is unsustainable unless the federal government raises its share of the cost from two-thirds to 90%.

New federal work rules are scheduled to begin in January 2027. State officials estimate that the changes would increase Pathways to Coverage’s enrollment to nearly 120,000 people over 18 months.

Between January 2021 and June 2026, Georgia and the federal government have spent more than $165 million on the program.

Houston County Schools to Add Security

The Houston County School District will install metal detectors at every middle school and high school after the Aug. 12 shooting at Warner Robins High School.

The district announced the decision Thursday and expects to receive the systems within four to eight weeks. Stadiums and competition gyms are also getting detectors, and a security guard is set to be placed at each middle school, high school, and the Houston College & Career Academy.

A 14-year-old freshman is facing multiple charges after he allegedly shot another classmate in the leg during a bathroom fight at Warner Robins High School. Authorities believe the firearm came in through a book bag.

Last week, Pulaski County Schools implemented metal detector screenings for every K-12 student.

Olympic Cauldron Relocation to Continue

Atlanta Legacy '96 says it will move the 1996 Olympic cauldron out of Summerhill to Centennial Olympic Park despite objections from Mayor Andre Dickens and residents of the neighborhood.

Group president Jeff Cravens wrote a letter to Dickens earlier this week stating that the plan is moving forward, and the park is where the cauldron can be "enjoyed, photographed, and shared by all of Atlanta and visitors for years to come."

Dickens wrote in his Aug. 13 letter that the cauldron is an important piece of the community and should not be moved.

Georgia State University announced the relocation in June. The 120-foot Olympic Flame Tower and its connecting rings bridge will stay put.
