Trump Hits Pause on 50% Canada Tariffs

President Trump paused 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian imports late Tuesday, hours before they took effect, announcing a last-minute deal with Ottawa.

The three-day pause came after Trump's trade talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney. The duties, imposed under a rarely used Depression-era law, would have hit hockey sticks, wine, and other consumer goods over what the administration calls Canadian trade barriers on autos, alcohol, and dairy.

Trump also teased reviving the long-dead Keystone XL pipeline, writing it could be "awoken from the grave!" Former President Biden revoked its permits in 2021. Read the President's post on Truth Social.

Neither side has released the deal's terms. Canadian business groups had warned the 50% rate would effectively end many companies' U.S. sales.

Personalized Cancer Vaccine Passes Major Trial

A personalized melanoma skin cancer vaccine from Moderna and Merck succeeded in its first late-stage trial, the companies announced Wednesday, the first mRNA cancer vaccine ever to clear that bar.

The made-to-order shot targets the mutations specific to each patient's tumor. Paired with Merck's immunotherapy Keytruda in a trial of more than 1,100 melanoma patients, it kept the deadliest form of skin cancer from returning or spreading longer than Keytruda alone.

The companies expect to begin talks with regulators within months, and the vaccine is already being tested against lung, bladder, and kidney cancers.

Map: US Growth to 2040 Driven by Two States

A new population projection shows the U.S. will add 21.5 million people by 2040, but more than half that growth will land in just two states: Texas and Florida. Together, they're expected to gain 11.2 million residents. You can see projections for your state here.

On the flip side, 14 states are projected to lose population. Illinois leads the decline at nearly 650,000, followed by New York at 457,000. California, which grew every decade of the last century, is also expected to shrink.

The South is expected to account for the majority of growth, as deaths now outnumber births in 17 states and replacement migration tilts heavily toward warmer, cheaper regions.
