U.S. Army Pfc. Claude A. Dewberry was laid to rest Saturday in Pittsylvania County, 81 years after his death and on what would have been his 111th birthday.

Dewberry served with the 194th Tank Battalion’s medical detachment in the Philippines, survived the Bataan Death March, and spent more than two years in captivity.

Allied aircraft, unaware POWs were aboard, bombed the Oryoku Maru in December 1944. Dewberry survived but died when they attacked the Enoura Maru weeks later.

The DPAA identified his remains in June 2025 after disinterring unknown remains from a Honolulu cemetery. Dewberry was buried beside his mother in the family plot.

Virginia completed its final full weekend of early voting Sunday ahead of the Aug. 4 primary, with in-person voting continuing through Saturday, Aug. 1.

The election is the first under Senate Bill 438, which requires local election offices to offer voting hours on the second and third Sundays before elections.

The August primary includes U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and local contests in participating jurisdictions. Election Day is Aug. 4.

Article Icon 1Roanoke Details Flock Camera Guardrails

Roanoke Police Chief Scott Booth defended the city’s 24 Flock license plate-reading cameras as residents urged City Council to remove them over privacy concerns.

Booth said the cameras have helped save lives and identify suspects faster. The department reviews every officer’s use monthly and says misuse would bring disciplinary action.

Under Virginia law, officers may search the system only for authorized investigations or missing-person cases. The law requires audit trails, monthly reviews, and 21-day data deletion.

Police said Roanoke does not share Flock data with federal agencies. The debate follows the removal of 41 gunshot detectors after 30 were installed improperly.
