SWAT Ends Fort Lauderdale Standoff
Fort Lauderdale police arrested a man Sunday after a bloodied woman fled to a neighbor's home before dawn, and her boyfriend barricaded himself inside with one of his children. Police identified the man as Andrew Green, 42, and said he battered the woman inside an Airbnb rental. Officers breached the front door with explosives, and after the child was left unharmed, SWAT used an aerosol irritant to force Green out. He was taken into custody through the back of the home, and charges had not been announced Sunday afternoon. |
Senior Home Emptied after Roof Collapse
A partial roof collapse forced the evacuation of about 157 residents from the Aviata at Bradenton Villas assisted living facility Saturday evening. No injuries were reported. Officials blamed extensive water and termite damage. The collapse hit the facility's cafeteria, which was unoccupied at the time, and Hillsborough and Pinellas counties sent ambulances and accessible transit vehicles to help move residents safely. Residents were relocated to other assisted living facilities across the region, and some went home with loved ones as crews coordinated transportation and alternate housing into the night. |
Lake Eola's Swans Moved to Sanctuary
Orlando removed all 42 captive swans from Lake Eola early Saturday and relocated them to a sanctuary, ending the downtown park's century-old swan program for now. The city cited an avian flu outbreak that killed 29 swans earlier this year and a coming $60 million renovation of Lake Eola Park. The birds anchor one of Orlando's most photographed scenes; even the park's rental paddle boats are shaped like them. The flock joined previously rehomed swans at an FWC-licensed facility, and city leaders say some could eventually return, though no timeline has been announced. |
