Feds Freeze $1B in State Medicaid Payments

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Tuesday that the federal government is freezing more than $1 billion in Medicaid payments to California and Minnesota over suspected fraud.

California's share tops $867 million, including $646 million tied to in-home care, where spending grew at twice the national rate. Minnesota's $200 million spans 14 high-risk programs.

Kennedy said the payments will return once both states document that the claims are legitimate.

Investigators used artificial intelligence to flag the spending, including bills for treatment of patients who had already died. Gov. Gavin Newsom dismissed the freeze as a "recycled political stunt."

Court OKs Release of Biden Recordings

A federal appeals court has rejected former President Biden's bid to block release of audio recordings and transcripts from his interviews with memoir ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer.

The D.C. Circuit's 2-1 ruling found the public interest in disclosing the redacted material outweighs Biden's privacy claims. The court suspended its decision until Aug. 3, giving Biden time to consider a further appeal.

Zwonitzer’s interviews with Biden were later obtained by special counsel Robert Hur, who described Biden as a "sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory," fueling Republican demands for the raw audio that could reveal signs of early cognitive decline.

Biden sued to prevent the Justice Department from releasing the material to Congress and the Heritage Foundation, which filed a FOIA request for the files.

Pan Am Wreck Found 74 Years after Crash

A search team announced Tuesday it has located the wreckage of a Pan Am plane that crashed off Puerto Rico in 1952, killing 52 people on a flight bound for New York City.

The Clipper Endeavor went down 10 minutes after takeoff. Everyone survived the impact, but the plane sank within minutes as panicked passengers stayed aboard rather than using life rafts.

An underwater drone spotted the aircraft nearly 2,000 feet down last month, its Pan Am logo still visible after seven decades. See the footage here.

The tragedy prompted sweeping safety reforms, making pre-flight briefings and emergency demonstrations mandatory. The Discovery Channel will feature the find on a coming episode of Expedition Unknown.
