Whatever Happened To...

Whatever happened to Tang?

In 1957, General Foods cooked up a concoction of orange "flavor crystals" that the company named Tang. It hit shelves two years later as a vitamin-fortified instant breakfast drink, and almost nobody bought it.

Then NASA came calling. The agency needed something lightweight, shelf-stable, and strong enough to mask the taste of recycled spacecraft water, and Tang fit the bill. When astronaut John Glenn sipped it aboard Friendship 7 in 1962, General Foods pounced, slapping launch pads on the canisters and sponsoring ABC's coverage of Apollo 8.

Kids everywhere begged for "the astronaut drink." Here’s one of the early space commercials, and here’s a later one.

But what goes up must come down, and by the late 1980s, parents were reaching for Capri Sun pouches and juice boxes, and Tang, packing 29 grams of sugar a glass, started gathering dust. A late 90s orangutan mascot couldn't save it.

But here's the twist: while Americans moved on, the rest of the world didn't. Tang shifted its focus to developing markets, and by 2011, it was a billion-dollar global brand, fueled by Brazil, Argentina, the Philippines, and the Middle East, where more than half of annual sales happen in the six weeks around Ramadan.

Today, it comes in flavors like soursop, horchata, and buko pandan. You can still grab a canister at Walmart. It tastes just like 1969.

Did you grow up drinking Tang? What's the one discontinued (or almost-discontinued) product you wish would make a full comeback?
