Ohio Named Top State for Business

Ohio was ranked the nation’s top state for business for the first time, leading an annual list that graded all 50 states across 138 metrics. You can view the complete study here.

The Buckeye State climbed from No. 5 last year to No. 1, marking five straight years of gains and a 33-spot rise since 2010. Ohio scored 1,623 of a possible 2,500 points, finishing nine points ahead of runner-up North Carolina.

Ohio placed first in both infrastructure and cost of doing business. Infrastructure was the most heavily weighted category this year—nearly 18% of the total score. The state has no corporate income tax and sits within a day’s drive of more than 143 million people.

Officials pointed to a string of major projects, from a semiconductor complex to new battery and drone plants, as evidence the state’s pro-growth strategy is working.

Senator Threatens Cincinnati Funding

U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, is warning Cincinnati that it could jeopardize federal funding over the city’s “potentially illegal and wasteful DEI Procurement Ordinance.”

In a letter to Mayor Aftab Pureval, Moreno said the measure could run afoul of President Trump’s executive orders barring diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. He warned the city could risk millions in federal aid tied to housing, business tax breaks, and neighborhood work.

City officials disputed the claim, saying the ordinance only merged two existing departments and did not authorize new spending. The decade-old program it oversees helps minority- and women-owned firms compete for city contracts.

Pureval’s office declined to comment but said the mayor would respond with a letter of his own in the coming days.

Outdoor Hoops Event Announced

Four of Ohio’s biggest college basketball programs will share one court this fall in a first-of-its-kind outdoor doubleheader.

On Oct. 7, Ohio State will face Cincinnati, and Xavier will meet Dayton at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, the outdoor home of the Cincinnati Open. It will mark the first time all four in-state rivals have appeared at the same event.

The event will bring basketball to the renovated tennis venue, where Center Court—usually reserved for pro tennis—will be converted into an open-air hardwood arena. University of Dayton Arena will serve as the backup site if weather interferes.

The games also will serve as a fundraiser, with proceeds supporting mental health awareness across Ohio. Start times and ticket details haven’t been announced.
