DNA Breach Payments Detailed

Georgia will receive $452,232 from a multistate settlement with the bankruptcy trustee of genetic testing company 23andMe following a 2023 breach, state Attorney General Chris Carr's office said.

The breach exposed the genetic data of 6.9 million customers worldwide, including 171,125 Georgians, with the information published for sale on the dark web.

Carr joined 41 other attorneys general in the combined $18 million settlement for participating states. The payment is separate from a $47 million consumer class-action settlement.

Investigators found "unreasonable" data security practices. The company filed for bankruptcy in March 2025, and its assets were sold to a nonprofit formed by founder Anne Wojcicki.

GOP Sets Sights on Ossoff

President Trump and other Republicans are sharpening their attacks on Democrat U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff as his closely watched re-election race intensifies ahead of November's midterms.

At Trump's Marietta event Wednesday, the president boosted GOP Senate challenger U.S. Rep. Mike Collins and said Ossoff and Democrats "want to let the Marxists into power, bankrupt your families and leave you totally undefended with wide open borders."

Collins, who missed the event for key House votes in Washington, D.C., has branded Ossoff "an out-of-touch, far-left" liberal who supports massive spending bills, open borders and allowing boys to play in girls' sports.

Ossoff has fired back, calling Trump the "world's most famous sore loser," criticizing GOP policies, and seeking to label Collins as a bigot, which Collins rejects.

In the 2020 Senate runoff election, Ossoff defeated Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. David Perdue by a margin of 50.6% to 49.4%. In the general election, Perdue outpolled Ossoff by 49.7% to 47.9%, falling short of the 50% threshold to win the seat outright.

SEC Pauses Some Rivalries

Some of the Southeastern Conference's longest football rivalries are on hiatus as the league introduces a nine-game conference schedule this season.

Georgia will not face Tennessee for the first time since 1991, though the Bulldogs' rivalries with Auburn and Florida were preserved. The moves aim to boost teams' strength of schedule under the 12-team college playoff format that awards seven at-large spots.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey touted the adjusted matchups, with teams also playing a 10th game against a Power Four opponent, reviving matchups like Arkansas-Texas.

In other Georgia athletics news, the school was nominated for USA Today's readers' choice awards for stadium, mascot, fight song, tailgating, and Athens as a college town. Voting is open through Aug. 17.
