OpenAI Picks Effingham County

OpenAI plans to build a $20 billion data center campus in Effingham County, one of the largest private investments in coastal Georgia's history, local leaders announced Wednesday.

Dubbed "Project Camellia," the roughly 1,400-acre campus will sit inside the 2,600-acre Savannah Gateway Industrial Hub near Rincon and is expected to create hundreds of long-term jobs.

County Manager Tim Callanan said tax revenue from the plant could also let Effingham eliminate county homestead property taxes as early as next year. Georgia Power will provide electricity to the roughly 3,200-megawatt plant, stating that the project will result in savings for residential customers and not higher costs.

OpenAI will host a public open house about the project from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Effingham College & Career Academy. The company touted the project's economic potential and also encouraged the public to learn more about its first data center campus in Abilene, Texas.

Trump Visits, Honors Soldier

President Trump visited Wheeler High School in Marietta on Wednesday to promote the new Trump Accounts and rally support for Republican candidates.

Earlier in the day, Trump gave the Georgia family of fallen U.S. soldier Tyler Feehan a ride home on Air Force One following a dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

At the Marietta event, Trump was joined by GOP gubernatorial nominee Rick Jackson and praised the party's U.S. Senate nominee, Mike Collins, who was in Washington, D.C., for key House votes.

Thousands of people lined up to see the president. A school district official responded to critics of the event, saying, "Regardless of who is president, when the White House wants to honor your schools, you say yes."

Young Recalls Ali's 1996 Secret

Former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young shared new details about Muhammad Ali's surprise Olympic torch lighting as the city marks the 30th anniversary of its hosting of the 1996 Summer Games.

At the time, Young said organizers tried to keep the boxing legend hidden in a hotel the day before the ceremony, but Ali grew restless and insisted on venturing out for a haircut.

Ali visited a barbershop and beauty parlor, greeted residents with a playful boxing routine, then bought lunch at a southwest Atlanta seafood restaurant.

Despite the crowds, Ali's role in the ceremony remained secret until the lighting of the cauldron. Today, his appearance ranks among the most iconic moments in sports history.
